Thunder Mountain
Published in Unknown Binding by Mother Bird Books (1996)
Average review score:

exciting, strange, sensitive evocation of rural mountain NMUncle River lives in the mountains he writes about, and he provides a different viewpoint from most western mountain literature. He observes the people very carefully and sensitively. His story has an ecological awareness which puts Earth First and Save the Forest activism in a new light. Highly recommended. List price is $ll.00.

Tibet's Sacred Mountain: The Extraordinary Pilgrimage to Mount Kailas
Published in Paperback by Inner Traditions Intl Ltd (01 September, 1999)
Average review score:

For Lovers of Sacred Mountains and Tibetan Buddhists esp. This is an extraordinary work, and it is great to see it in paperback. The pictures of Lake Manasarovar itself make it worth purchasing. It pictures a place on this planet where the spiritual, what by some might be referred to as weird, or totally otherworldy, imbues the whole atmosphere. A landscape like no other on earth. Mt. Kailas has been a pilgrimage destination for Hindus, Bon-pos, and Buddhists for centuries, and this book is a must for anyone considering such a journey themselves. For those who grew up reading The Way of the White Clouds by Lama Govinda , or The Sacred Mountain, by John Snelling, this work beautifully sums up Mt. Kailas within the context of the late 20th century, and is illuminating for those who dream of someday attempting to undertake their own pilgrimage in the 21st. Very insightful and wonderful for armchair travelers also. An excellent effort.

The Tortoise and the JackrabbitSusan Lowell has adapted the classtic story of the Tortoise and the Hare perfectly for desert readers. As a kindergarten teacher in Arizona, I love reading this story to my students because it is relevant for them. They love listening to it!

Touching Tibet
Published in Paperback by Travellers Eye (June, 1900)
Average review score:

WonderfulIn the early 1980's, Tibet was briefly opened up to individual travellers. Niema Ash was fortunate enough to be there. Not having any previous knowledge of the situation in Tibet, she soon discovered that behind the smiles of the Tibetans were lives of pain, suffering & loss under the rule of Communist China. Despite this, the warmth, hospitality & good nature of the Tibetan people shines through.
Niema gives wonderful descriptions of the Potala, the Jokhang, the Tibetans & Lhasa in general. She was also priviledged with a rare opportunity of seeing a sky burial. Her visit to Tibet certainly touched her more than she expected.

Touring Texas Gardens

Outstanding! This directory spotlights the best of Texas gardens. Many are hard-to-find treasures you'll recommend to gardening friends and family as great destination spots, or as ideal along-the-way travel breaks while driving through the state.
The guide book provides details about each special garden: days and hours, garden type, size, themes, special "don't-miss" features, and even "bird alert" notes for birders. Many Texans don't know about these secret places -- I didn't! -- but with TOURING TEXAS GARDENS you'll find favorites to return to, time and again.

A complete, informative and beautifully illustrated book.Authors Eddington and Makov give wonderful information on a myriad of places in the Four Corners Region where you can purchase Native American arts and crafts. Beautifully illustrated with hand-tinted photographs, the guidebook not only lists galleries and museums, but also old, authentic trading posts, where maybe the only thing you'll acquire will be a sense of nostalgia for the past. A Tramp Across the Continent

Average review score:

hilarious and true adventure talesLummis was a real character with a 'perfect body and awakened mind' who walked from Cincinnati to his new job in Los Angeles in winter of 1884-1885. His adventures are terrific and his self-confidence supreme and enabling of his success. He was open and accepting of all people, flamboyent, bombastic and an asset to the development of Los Angeles, its library, the Southwest Museum and the peaceful relocation of the native Americans to reservations. (He had been appointed to that task by his Harvard classmate, Teddy Roosevelt. Clean, funny and very well written!

Trekking and Climbing in Nepal (Trekking & Climbing Guides)
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (January, 2001)
Average review score:

Preparing and Enjoying Your Trekking and Climbing in NepalI have purchased just about all of the trekking guides, including descriptions of trekking peaks, that are available for Nepal, but always felt that they lacked a little something. This book has the little something that makes it better than most of the trekking guides. It combines essential trekking information for major treks along with great descriptions of climbing routes all written compactfully in one easy to manage book. It is thorough, well-written and very complete. It not only describes the trek or climb, but also provides a good brief history, alternatives, good graphics and a great strip maps which provide altitude, time, distance charts which I find very helpful. It's well written and has good maps and a lot of useful information in charts as well as text. The photos are excellent and both beautiful and useful. Overall, I found this to be the most useful single trekking guide and began to use it immediately.
